Some pictures from days past i just found
sam burning up the jib scene in les arcs
and then dropping airs, he does it all
common theme to this trip-the picnic on the mountain
sam shredding the last know powder in europe
funky lift systems here
some cool grafitti in grenoble
sam and mark
loving europe
And then Kinsey came to town
not kinsey but some art in Annecy
Kinsey fulfilling her 15 minutes of being French for the day by ordering some pasteries
the long lost violin maker right here in Annecy
lunch by the lake, watch out for the seagulls
finding a wine cork in france was just about one of the hardest things i have ever had to do. me trying to find a substitute for the time being
cheese galore, I never knew there were so many kinds that all tasted so delicious.
caught this hilarious photo op in annecy. i wonder for what mag that one was for
no generational gap here
kvetter walking on water
after annecy we went to our good friend David's hometown of Les Laix. The old stomping grounds David
His Aunt Sofie put us up for a couple nights and made us feel at home. Thanks for the hospitality.
They took us skiing at La Rosier with his little relative Anthony and family friends. good time despite the snow
the crew for the day-
some good wrecks into fences
and some backwards starts
and italian teeth
Sofie and Frank showed us the magical world of raclette. my new favorite food
kids to their moms"they dont even understand us when we talk to them?!"
must have been a relaxing lift ride, hahaha
we drove across the border into italy and were pretty shocked at the smog in Torino. Thank god we headed up into the mountains to fins some interesting traditional architecture in Alagna
first gondola ride we met another Frank who was super stoked on skiing. he showed us one side of the Monte Rosa ski area to the other, all at 73 years old. He was a ripper
frank the character
always interesting conversations with frank
after we drove towards venice and were shocked at the fog/smog enveloping central italy. it made for very incognito cooking on sidewalks.
venice-small streets, rivers, and bridges
it was very nice in the off season with no other tourists
went to the venice naval museum- one of the better museums i have been to.
kinsey at the dead end
we found the ambulance boats, and where they get worked on, all at once
I want one of these star globes
cool model ships
stumbled into the fish market
eating some frog legs, chinese style
one of the funnier incidents among my travels. the post man say to put the cards into the box next to the post office. so we look at this box and think it sure looks funny. we tried for 5 minutes to get a card in there and finally got one, out of six. then some lady waling by enjoying our nonstop laughter tells us its the box just 10 meters away, not that one. so then knisey and i tried to get it out for another 5 minutes while laughing to the point of tears. we finally gave up
After 2 days in venice we went up to see the italian dolomites. i think the most striking mountains i have ever seen in my life.
the red rager enjoying the scenic drive
here the lift goes right to the top, no joking around
our second day in the dolomites we went for a nice tour over a mountain pass to see what the mountains looked like
so amazing
ran into some mountain deer
it was an amazing day despite the lack of snow
near the top we saw the italian way to ski the backcountry-the italian downhill, no longer called the chinese downhill
After two days in the dolomites we went across the border to Innsbruck Austria. Amazing city in an awesome location. Met a fellow American Scott. check out his photographs-http://www.scottmbaker.com/
logging in at McDonalds
Scott Kinsey and I after a Powder day near Innsbruck
The backpackers we stayed at was made in the 16th century. everything is a little older here-a door knob
from Innsbruck we went to Mt. Rigi in Switzerland to spend a night up at the farm where Andre's Girlfriend Heidi works to say hi. we were late for the second to last train at 7:30 so we thought we would hike to the farm instead of waiting for the 10pm train. little did we know how long it would take
Kinsey was not a happy camper by the top, but how could i blame her for that aft5er 1:30 of hiking?
met some interesting people at the farm. the character behind me has lived there for 15 years, only leaving to visit the doctor!
kinsey's picture
the next day we went to Zurich and saw some local sights-the pet rabbit hangout zone
we bought some raclette grills and then made some for our last meal. I unfortunately had to drop off Kinsey at the airport the next day. thanks for a great trip kinsey, lets do it again soon.
then i took off to visit my good Aussie friend Andrew in Murren
it sure was a windy road
into the beautiful valley of a thousand waterfalls
up at the schilthorn the next day Andrew and his brother Toby knew right where to go to find some good snow
Andrew
It is easy to skin with views like this
and the BAM, we saw an avalanche off the top of the Jungfrau from glacial shedding. biggest avalanche i have ever seen
the goats around here do some gnarly lines. andrew with the point
Andrew testing the snow conditions
a sequence shot of toby taken by andrew
me by andrew
another point
the snow was even good down low
well, and up high too
it was great snow to be skiing on a couple weeks after the last storm
a cool splicing job by andrew
of this picture where the goats came down. I think they rode it better than me
sweet picture of Toby by andrew
I enjoyed time with Andrew's family here on vacation but unfortunately had to leave due to a wicked cough that had been building up for a little time. Right now i sequestered myself in the red rager waiting for the cough to go away. the snow forecast is looking dismall in europe for at least 2 weeks they are saying. Well see, but Andrew and I are talking about a non-skiing roadtrip which would be a first.

Hey Lars!!
ReplyDeleteNice pictures! You seem to have found the best parts of the Alps. You should visit Scandinavia too! There is good skiing in northern Norway ;)
Too bad I was in Finland when you visited Innsbruck! You have to come there again =) I'll be there again 15.2. to 10.3.
I showed your picture to my mom and she said you look just like her brother and dad!
We are so related :)
Kaisa
Hey Kaisa- The Alps are something else, by far the coolest mountains in the world(that I have seen). I have been seriously thinking about going up to Norway since the snow here has pretty much all gone. I found flights for only 400$ to Tromso!
ReplyDeleteInnsbruck is one of the greatest towns i have visited so far. Lots of history with an even better setting.
I am sure we are related, it would only make sense because you are a spitting image of my sister. As I heard the other day "the world is a village"
Awesome travels, Lars. Awesome.

ReplyDeleteLars:
Your mom sent me your blogspot the other day. I was bragging about MN getting 16" of new powder and me being able to get down to Welch for a couple hours...kinda put my couple hours of "up and down" every 45 seconds into perspective.
Your travails are incredible. Lotsa envy on my account. I commented to Kim that I wish I woulda had the wherewithal to do what you're doing when I was your age. I didn't...too much of that conservative, German work ethic I was raised with.
"Powder on" Lars...be safe. Try a Steigl Pils and toast us Minnesotans who wish we were where you are!
K
Awesome blog. Nice pic of the Schilthorn. I did that area in 2010 - climbing down from the station, then ridge hike up to the left and over. Peace.
